Being a strong minded athlete, Ben looked for the edge in the weight room. When he noticed he was getting stronger faster than most of the others, he poured his whole self into working out every day. The more he worked out the faster he improved physically as well as in his confidence. After a few years he attained the look of “men’s health”, but he wanted more. Wanting more muscle he joined a local hardcore gym, which is where he discovered his truest passion of bodybuilding. In time he earned his dues and was able to work out and train with the best there. Watching and emulating the huge bodybuilders at this gym is where he got his passion started for bodybuilding today. Ben’s philosophy from the beginning was his love for training, his desire to work harder and to improve himself every day. His father was another influence for his love of bodybuilding. His dad would tell him stories of when he was young and had tremendous leg and shoulder strength.
Ben talks of one of his earliest memories from the gym of an elderly gentleman explaining to him the art of the squat. Ben said that these words shaped his approach to his training in the years to follow. These words were “son, the body is an amazing structure, and as with any structure is must begin from the ground first! Build a strong base with your legs, and the rest will follow!” Ben says that it still took him two years to let his dad visit the gym to watch him squat. He was only 17 at the time and squatted 4 plates, 405 lbs. for 3 sets of 8. His dad then introduced him to Scott Abel a Canadian bodybuilding coach in Canada. In just 4 years Ben went from a 175 lb. kid toting small abs and little muscle to 250 lbs. with firm abs.
Ben still relates that the late Tom Hall as the most influential person regarding his bodybuilding career. He taught him right from wrong in bodybuilding as well as in life. Ben says that Tom took the time to make sure he was doing and learning the correct biomechanical way for each and every exercise. He also showed him how a bodybuilder should eat and most importantly why. Tom was the one that got Ben his first Muscletech contract. Tom never got to see Ben compete, as he passed away a few weeks before he was to attend that competition. Since then Ben has always done his shows in Tom’s honor for the rest of his career.
